The great minds that formed this wonderful democracy knew that a political party could not be trusted with the power to overturn an election with only a 50% vote.

Thank goodness for that! If all they required was a simple majority in the Senate too, they would have voted to convict and remove the President, in a heartbeat! No witnesses, no arguments, no defense, nothing. Just go for the vote, like they did in the House. Hyde would have used his "no need to reinvent the wheel" argument one more time and the vote would have taken place long ago!
