China's Public Security Bureau Probes Piracy / Mass Murder Case

Pirates are believed to have killed 23 crewmen in what looks like the second case of mass murder by pirates in a matter of weeks. China's Public Security Bureau (PSB) has arrested seven men suspected of killing the crew of a Panamanian-flag, Hong Kong-managed bulk carrier when the vessel passed Hong Kong in mid-December.

PSB officers were, is understood, led to the men by a photo showing a group of pirates partying on board the 16,785 dwt Cheung Son after they killed the crew and seized the vessel carrying low value furnace slag from Shanghai to Port Klang.

The men arrested have reportedly admitted planning the attack after being paid 100,000 yuan each. It is believed the bodies of six of the crew have been discovered near Shantou. Former mainland soldiers are understood to have been among the pirates who used a stolen speedboat to intercept the ship.

More than a few cases of piracy in recent months have been trailed to the China coast.

Today a Filipino vessel is reported missing and assumed another victim of piracy; meanwhile, the PLA Navy is busy at Mischief Reef.

In other news, Hong Kong which has been the world's busiest port since 1992 has lost the title to Singapore.
