3Com Phones Home

StreetQ has heard substantial numbers of rumors circulating that 3Com (COMS) and FORE Systems (FORE) are considering a merger. FORE designs, develops, manufactures and sells high performance networking products based on ATM technology. Fore Systems currently has the fastest switch available in the market. So, a merger will give COMS a technological leada over telecom vendors Lucent Technologies and Cisco Systems. It will also give COMS a larger share of the ATM switch market. On Monday, FORE closed at 17 1/16 up 11/16 (+4.20%) after it won Network Computing's Editor's Choice Award for best ATM solution. 3COM closed at 46 up 5/8 (+1.38%). StreetQ has heard that FORE could be valued as high as $30 per share in the event of a merger.
