Both Kodak and Motorola were Kings, not Gorillas. they dominated their markets, but did not make the "rules". You did not have to build to their standards. Intel, Microsoft, and Cisco are "rulemakers". The others must build to their standards.

It is not altogether clear why Motorola munched the big one -- too unfocused (making memory and mpus and satellite systems, and mobile phones.), weak management (how many Galvins do they need), too "soft" management, too collegial, ... who really knows -- but the massive failure in cell phones is its main disaster.
