While I have no idea what drives the market to make these short term gyrations I do believe this news has got to be devastating in the startup community.

There has been a lack of products out there supplying high density edge routing. Cisco never quite got there, Bay didn't, 3Com was a no show. Fore bought Cadia and it died. Sentient???. This market gave Cascade its life (without the routing). It is apparently a "hard" problem. I know of a number of startup attempting to "ASIC" there way into this area. If an established vendor (NT/BAY) has in fact delivered then the time to market opportunity for the startup just shrank.
