Good points. And I read that Feingold himself has said today that his vote should NOT be interpreted as a vote for conviction. Far from it.

This is gonna be a loooooooooong ride, folks! Just as I had wished. <G>

To support your point, Borzou, the main issue pressed by Feingold's opponent, Mark Neumann, was the dreaded PBA issue, where Feingold didn't pass muster. Neumann is actually sort of interesting, he had his own integrity after a fashion. He took Les Aspen's old seat in Newt's class of '94, and got a choice appointment to Defense Appropriations or whatever the main Defense committee is called. But then he had the temerity to wonder aloud what was going on with everybody there pushing to raise defense spending when they were supposed to be balancing the budget. The House leadership was not amused, and he lost the choice committee spot. There was one of those NYT magazine cover stories on him a year ago, too, quite complementary. That dang eastern liberal elite press at work again.

I wasn't much impressed with Neumann in the Senate campaign, though. Pretty down and dirty, and he was a sore loser, refusing to concede and blaming his loss on Madison. He actually failed to carry his home town of Janesville, Milwaukee too. The race was far too close for comfort.
