Smoothie,
What Mamma Bear meant was - If you have shares in your possession (ie.- certifiacte) you can sell thru your broker with the agreement that within 3 days you will endorse that certificate and the broker will take possession of your shares.

Lord Smooth, many brokerages allow one to sell stocks that are not in the account. My Waterhouse account is one, and I understand this is common at many full service brokers. Some folks keep their shares in safe deposit boxes. The shares must be delivered by settlement. I can also make a trade and deliver the money before settlement. Of course margin interest is accruing in the meantime. Datek does not allow any of this.

It would have been an abuse of a nice privilege, and probably illegal to have done so. But it was tempting indeed.
