Global One Is Optimistic
About Recovery in Asia
By CONNIE LING
THE WALL STREET JOURNAL INTERACTIVE EDITION

HONG KONG -- Global One, the international joint venture of Deutsche Telekom AG, France Telecom SA and Sprint Corp., expects significant growth from areas such as data products and broadband applications in the Asia-Pacific region in the coming year, according to the company's president and chief executive officer.

Speaking at a press conference Friday, Global One's Gary Foresee expressed optimism about the recovery of its business in the region. "We were not immune in 1998 from the economic problems [in Asia]," said Mr. Foresee. "But we are hopeful that a recovery is on the way." Asia-Pacific last year accounted for between 20% to 30% of Global One's total revenue.

The main focus of Global One's Asia-Pacific operations in 1999, he said, will be data products, as well as services using its broadband asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network.

However, Mr. Foresee -- who is on a tour of Global One's major bases in the region -- said that while the consortium expects its global operations to break even in 2001, the strict regulatory environment in Asia will mean a longer period of investment in the region.

Global One has a presence in all Asian nations, including China, mainly through local partnerships, said Lee Sparkman, its vice president for Asia, Middle East and Africa.
