The provider of broadband and satellite-based video communications said its operating earnings per share in the second quarter ended December was 16 cents per share, above the First Call consensus of 6 cents per share. ''We are pleased with the results of the quarter and that commercial deployments of our Explorer 2000 digital interactive systems are gathering momentum,'' said Scientific-Atlanta President and Chief Executive Officer James F. McDonald. ''We are focused on accelerating the deployment of our digital networks in the quarter ahead,'' he added. The company shipped about 126,000 Explorer 2000 set-tops in the second quarter. Earlier this month, Time Warner Cable, a unit of Time Warner Entertainment Co, L.P., bought 100,000 Explorer 2000 set-tops in preparation for its launch in Austin, Texas, and other systems in 1999. Time Warner Cable, which serves 12 million subscribers in 37 states, is committed to buying 1.1 million set-tops, with an option for 500,000 additional units.
