Thursday January 28, 8:00 am Eastern Time Company Press Release Ascend First to Ship SDSL With 2.3 Mbps For Increased Performance and Enhanced Service Delivery Capabilities Network Access Solutions Deploys Ascend's New High-Speed SDSL for the DSLTNT and MAX TNT WAN Access Switch ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 28, 1999-- Ascend Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:ASND - news), a leader in wide area networking (WAN) and Intelligent Networking (IN) solutions for providers and users of the next-generation public network, today announced that it is the first company to ship high-speed Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL) with 2.3 Mbps, which enables multiple service offerings and customization capabilities on one high-density DSLTNT platform. Broadening its roll-out of high-speed data services based on the Ascend MultiDSL offerings, Network Access Solutions (NAS) is deploying the new Ascend SDSL solution for the DSLTNT(TM) to deliver high-speed access over a single pair of copper wire (see related press release: ascend.com . NAS, a Virginia-based competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC), is rolling out the Ascend SDSL services in nine major cities in the Bell Atlantic region. Equipped with 2.3 Mbps capability, the Ascend SDSL solution is providing NAS with high-speed symmetric technology that supplies greater bandwidth in the local loop, doubling the reach of today's existing DSL capabilities. The Ascend SDSL solution, which is based on Conexant's ZipWire(TM) Modem, also enables multi-rate services that allows NAS to offer multiple services at variable rates. This solution not only enables NAS to offer its customers more service choices, but also lets them deliver these services in a cost-efficient manner. ''We are very excited to take advantage of Ascend's state-of-the-art DSL technology, which will enable us to bring higher bandwidth and extend the service reach to our enterprise customers,'' said John Aust, chief executive office for NAS. ''In deploying Ascend's high-speed SDSL we are able to meet the growing business demands of our customers by providing them with tailored next-generation services, including real-time conferencing, high-speed multimedia technologies and remote office applications. As we continue to address the evolving solutions of our customers, we look forward to extending our collaborative relationship with Ascend.'' NAS is deploying the Ascend SDSL solution through the DSLTNT located in its central office and interconnecting its metro networks with SDSL and ISDN Digital Subscriber Line (IDSL) for optimized customer-reach. Ideal for multi-tenant buildings, the new Ascend SDSL solution will supply high-speed access to NAS' customers' desktops on the customer premises and create additional service options as their business requirements evolve. This high-speed SDSL card with 2.3 Mbps also runs on Ascend's market-leading MAX TNT(TM) WAN access switches. ''The Ascend SDSL card, which utilizes our ZipWire(TM) chipset, enables CLECs to offer new low-cost business connectivity services that combine symmetric data transport at substantially higher data rates than those of T1 lines,'' said Raouf Halim, senior vice president and general manager of Conexant's Network Access Division. ''The Ascend SDSL solution enables service providers to offer business users a solution that is faster than 56Kbps modems, frame-relay service and 128 Kbps ISDN lines.'' The Ascend SDSL Solution The DSLTNT and MAX TNT SDSL-HS line card provides the highest port density in the industry with 360 lines per system and supports a variety of subscriber services, including T1/E1 services, WAN, remote and server access, Internet/intranet, video on demand, simplex video and interactive multimedia. The Ascend DSLTNT also supports security and network management capabilities and is compatible with telephone company network equipment. ''By deploying our MultiDSL solutions NAS is creating a series of powerful networks to meet its last mile requirements,'' said Kurt Bauer, vice president of product marketing for Ascend's Access Switching Division. ''Ascend's high-speed SDSL card for the DSLTNT takes these services to the next level, enabling higher service capabilities at higher speeds with the added benefit of customized service offerings that meet the growing demands of its customers' bandwidth needs.'' Providing International compatibility, the Ascend SDSL with 2.3 Mbps will allow International PTTs to replace 2 Mbps E1 circuits using only one pair of copper wire. Neil
