Dave, so you are the illusive Home LAN customer we've all been hearing about but never met. I see the HLAN as a good thing, but wonder how many are equipped to handle the installation?

I have a friend who does support for an ISP and regularly hear stories like customers asking where the number keys are on the modem to make it dial.

<I regularly get 32K downloads with my 256K service, and my friend in Seattle reports he is getting 60+K downloads.>

I'm a bit confused. These download speeds are terrible. Even 256K is a weak development. I think cable modems currently support 1.5Mbps. I hear them talking about boosting that speed to 50Mbps. 256K hardly seems like it's worth the mental energy to make the switch from a 56k modem.

I wonder if the service you are getting is being slowed down to prevent a mass conversion of T-1 customers to xDSL? Can you see anyone keeping an ISDN?

Do you still have to pay for basic phone service in addition to the charges for xDSL service? What about your ISP? Do they charge more for special service? Is the service up 24 hours?

Compared to a cable modem which is up at all times, ISP charges included, and no phone line charges all for less than $40 per month, you've got a strong competition coming from the cable guys.

Regards,

Mark

Mr. Hanson,

To you and Mr. Strachman I confess that I am green with envy. In Malaysia the ISPs are run by guys whose only experience heretofore was that they played with two cans and a string as children (just a couple of years ago in other words). <G>
Best,
Stitch
