<<< take a stab >>> Two thoughts are germinating. One is, that no matter how far the Ampex broadcast message takes flight in people's imaginations, at base there seems to be an Ampex equipment solution (of the highest quality). To say it another way, given the present delivery systems, Ampex will take narrow and broadband broadcasting to the next several levels of accomplishment and this level will only be capable if one uses Ampex patented and branded equipment - not Sony equipment, not IBM equipment, no one else's. The second thought is also equipment related. If the above back end equipment can deliver as specified and can include an interactive (feedback / response ) feature which the Internet permits, then using proprietary patented processes, a mass produced Ampex "set top" unit will interact / cache / store data and signals at the end-user site and permit the Internet delivery of digital TV, high-fidelity tuneable sound, scrambled secure data responses, interactive game playing, and possibly a local and long distance telephone interface. While the back end and front end may use standard transmission protocols, obviously, both will work best if the equipment at both ends is Ampex branded. The Internet business model is exciting and open ended. However, there lies it's problem. Since it is an "open" media, it is possible that no player on the Internet front lines will ever make competitive profits. In contrast, profits will accrue to those who control the information supply mechanism and the delivery process and can set the standards of delivery fashion - in sum the nuts and bolts. Soon, the investment community at large will catch on to this lil' fact and delegate the high flying front liners to oblivion and reward those providers with a standard product which has defining engineered technology built into it.
