US APICS INDEX UP TO 52.4 IN JANUARY FROM 47.6 IN DECEMBER
There are "no signs of an emerging slowdown" in the manufacturing industry yet, said APICS economist Michael Evans, the creator of the index. "Consumers and businesses have fully recovered from the shock of last summer, and have reinstated their previously robust spending plans."

The manufacturing employment index bounced back to 46.1 from 37.8 in December, consistent with an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 decline in manufacturing employment in January, Evans said. Even with increased demand, the desire to cut costs remains, Evans said.
