Lou Mazzucchelli of Gerard, Klauer, Mattison says that by selling a portion of AltaVista shares and keeping the rest, Compaq might put its non-Internet units in compromising situations. "If you're an AltaVista competitor and you're using Compaq servers, maybe you'll buy Sun [Microsystems (SUNW)] servers," he explains"<<

Victor, I for one found this statement really strange. It suggests that if Alta Vista were developed in-house and CPQ kept 100% of it, that competitors would be more likely to buy CPQ than if it held only a portion of AV. Strange logic to me.

Stuart.

RE: If you're an AltaVista competitor and you're using Compaq servers
I can't imagine that an internet player would let that affect a hardware purchasing decision.

I tend to agree with Stuart, except that I don't believe CPQ's ownership of AV is likely to affect the competitive landscape in any significant way, one way or another. The reality is that the sites will buy whatever will get the job done cheaply and reliably. For the largest sites, at the moment, that is SUN. CPQ is strong in this sector also, and getting stronger, but only partly on the strength of big Alpha servers, which is what AV runs on. If they produce the best platforms, they will get the business.
