Nice find CB. We've been talking about this for the past couple of months. When does the dang thing run out of steam -- that's the $64,000 question? Anybody?

CB, tanks fer da article. The major problem with the extensive use of esop is that it gives management strong incentives to help the stock price rise as quickly as possible but at the expense of the companies future . Martha M. is back hohoho . mike

CobaltBlue,
So the insanity continues, even though any bright 5th grader would know that you sell more shares in the market when your company's stock price is relatively high, and buy back the shares when they are relatively low. I guess these CEO's and board members never learned basic logic, and it shows!

Coby, Excellent piece. As I've often said, we are to fault. When we vote these slicksters incentive plans, we should look at what they are being incented to do. It is silly of us to think that people of weak moral fiber, which describes most of corporate America, will actually not try to maximize their own wealth no matter what the cost to the co. or the shareholder in the long term.

CB,

I gotta chime in, too. What a find! That WP article ranks right up there with Richebacher's 12/98 newsletter in its description of the "cause", if the "effect" ends up a severe, deflationary contraction.

I passed this on to the dozen or so friends and family members I've been sending articles to for the past 6 months [off topic - how many of you guys have been doing this?], commenting about the article,

"It has all the flavor of a French intelligence analyst giving a dispassionate assessment of the German's armored divisions at the beginning of 1940."

Great job, CB. Keep 'em coming.

Peter
