Walt- When you say the Japan ARIB proposal includes multiple chip rates does this mean they include 3.6xxx and 3.8xxx as well as maybe 4.06xxx? How is this possible? I haven't heard of this as an option so far since it seems this is a major bone of contention between Q and ERICY - both have claimed that this chip rate convergence is necessary for economies of scale in handset production etc. If the Japan ARIB proposal allows many chip rates - does this just mean they are being flexible on the proposal but will eventually converge on one or do you see this hybrid approach as a way to solve the impasse? Tom

Thanks for your reply. I don't think I understand very much of it. :) In particular, you say, "The use of multiple chip rates is just plain smart and spectrally efficient and is a very good idea."

I don't get it. I thought efficiency would be created by a single uniform chip rate. Could you explain in greater detail? Hopefully in layman's language.

BTW, for all us wireless lovers. Apparently, the contractors laying fiber optic for the cable company cut the SBC cable. A large area of north Dallas was without landline phone service for more than two days. Service was not supposed to be restored until Friday, January 29 but was restored sometime after midnight on January 28th. Even my mom (who uses her cell phone only for emergencies) was grateful for her wireless service.
