Scumbria, I remember reading someplace that a P2 Bios is supposed to check the revision level of a P2 when it starts up and download microcode patches to the chip. Except I can't remember where I read this, and maybe it was the P3.

heard that it saved Intel a number of mask revs.

If true, there should be a number of errata (errati?) for the Pentium II that were removed via a microcode fix. Meanwhile, Intel seems to have removed both the specifications and the errata list for the Pentium II from their web site. If you go to support.intel.com and click on "Specification & Errata," you get a single 1997 document describing software workarounds for the overflow flag problem.
