There is a reason why INTERNET Companies are gobbling each other at astro prices. The inflated assets are taken as goodwill and then
when the prices of the parent Company sink they create a loss for a tax write off.

Once these write offs are created , they will be attractive to Main stream Companies who will be the second Buyers at much lower prices but with a tax loss now available to offset their taxes.

<< Buyouts only take place where someone has a strong franchise. Is there any thing to prevent Yahoo from offerring a free auction site which would, of course, make the EBay site worth dramatically less. I recall one post where someone said Yahoo was getting into auctions. Anyone know if this is true? >>

Yahoo already has ebay style auctions. You can find Yahoo auctions at:

auctions.yahoo.com

According to the auction selling rules, these auctions are free. The following paragraph is from the the rules page (http://auctions.yahoo.com/html/seller/rules.html):

"Yahoo! Auctions is currently free to all users. You are responsible for all applicable taxes and for all costs that you incur by participating in Yahoo! Auctions. In our sole discretion, we may add to or change our services at any time. We may also, in our sole discretion, add to or delete fees associated with our services. If we do charge fees, we will tell you in advance."

Onsale runs the auction for them (the page says "powered by Onsale").
