John, what if, instead of dropping from 31 to 18 (only a 42% drop) it dropped to 12? Now you have 61% drop. The issue isn't whether you and I are long-term holders. The issue is what a drop in overall confidence in the market would do to those marginal investors.

I think it will increase the volatility of the market.

I think I disagree (although I'm not certain) with your final comment BTW- An economic slow-down would probably have a chilling effect on the IPO market, but would (also) probably slow down the current acquistion craze...so I'm unsure how it would effect overall stock supply...

Most of the mergers are exchanges of paper -- no cash involved. So long as the drivers are in place to favor consolidation mergers will continue. IPOs would dry up, however.
