I already use the CuSeeme software to videoconference over my computer with family. It is very cool. That is a big part of the strategy of Sony in this game. They want to create (already have for their own digital products) the equivilent of the universal bus to allow their products from CD players to digital camera's to hook up and interconnect to the set top box. They envision a Sony digital video cam on a tripod facing your family opening gifts at Christmas with your parents in Florida watching on TV! Of course they would have a camara set up also, so that both sides are watching each other on TV. This is no pipe dream, it is possible right now with the Explorer 2000. This means more people will want the service, more people will pay extra for this service and a lot of Sony digital video cams will be sold.

I spoke with Sony on this and they are very excited. They bought 7.5% of GI to gain a foothold in the business and have some say in the set top design. Most don't realize how close all of these "futuristic" applications are to commercial deployment as the systems go live. As I have said, the issue will be how to charge, regulate the bandwidth and access as well as run many seperate applications through the same pipe. The faster they expand bandwidth, the faster Sony, Intertainer, Wink and others will fill it.
