My take on why 90 percent of mutual funds don't beat the S&P 500 index is that [1]they hold too many positions ( in effect statistically index themselves), [2] they turnover their portfolios (150% on average), and [3] they charge a high internal fee (total expense ratio is often over 2 percent annually).

Mutual funds are only for those who haven't the wherewithal yet to diversify well enough (10 - 15 holdings).
