I don't think they'll all stop at exactly the same time, because I am sure they have several minutes of differentiation between them. Secondly, they would need to use similar technology in order for them to suffer the same fate, the same way, at the same time. It's not necessary, but it would make it more likely. Similarly, the bug would have to be the same, but that relates more to my last point, so it's probably an overlap.

I don't think the grid would fry. That is a bit extreme, from some of the things I've read about power generation. But...anything is possible.

Sorry MeDroogies, I'm afraid Alomex has won this one, at least in my estimation.

but there is a problem with that: 25% of the machines stop at the same time.

>>That implies these 25% all use very similar technology (not likely),

Why would that be necessary?

>>that the bug in 25% are all the same (not likely),

Again why?

Normally, usage falls off gradually, allowing dispatchers to call for generators to shut down. While the generators can flex their output current within ranges, a sudden 25% drop in usage will result in over currents, voltage spikes, and circuit breakers tripping.

But I doubt that that will all happen.
