NEWTON, Pa.--(BW HealthWire)--Jan. 28, 1999--The Pfizer
pharmaceutical sales division placed No. 1 overall in a 1998
Scott-Levin survey of U.S. physicians across nine core specialty
groups: general/family practitioners, internists, cardiologists,
obstetricians/gynecologists, pediatricians, general surgeons,
orthopedic surgeons, gastroenterologists, and psychiatrists.

This marks the fourth consecutive year a Pfizer sales force has
finished first across these groups. Pfizer also was rated first by
U.S. physicians in four of these key specialty groups: general/family
practitioners, cardiologists, general surgeons, and psychiatrists.

In addition to the unprecedented attention paid to the erectile
dysfunction treatment Viagra, Pfizer also benefited from the addition
of a fifth, 650-rep primary care force, Alta; the success of the
cholesterol reducer Lipitor, which Pfizer co-promotes with
Parke-Davis; and a direct-to-consumer campaign for the Alzheimer's
treatment Aricept.

These rankings come from Sales Force Structures & Strategies
1998-99, the 11th edition of the longest-running study of
pharmaceutical sales forces, conducted annually by the health care
consulting firm Scott-Levin. Twenty-eight physician specialty groups
were surveyed for this year(1)s study.

Other leaders among sales forces were Merck, rated first by
internal medicine specialists, nephrologists, and endocrinologists;
Glaxo Wellcome, first with pulmonologists and neurologists;
Wyeth-Ayerst, tops with OB/GYNs and orthopedic surgeons; Schering,
first with allergists and otorhinolaryngologists; Astra Merck, the
favorite among gastroenterologists; and Ross, foremost with
pediatricians.
