Ahhaha's estimate of T1 speeds for HFC is built more on economic factors than physical ones. It is a "guess" as to what average throughput a user will receive. Since the MSO's can enhance the cable system if it is overloaded it really boils down to what speed the users will find tolerable.
Coax itself under current cable standards carries 40Mb in a single TV channel. The best modems currently seem designed to be able to use up to 10Mb of that per user. Some reasonable portion of that is lost to network overhead just as in any ethernet like system.
If the entire bandwidth of the cable were used for internet instead of TV you could get maybe 4Gb raw data throughput (rough guess).

The throughput speeds I state are practical realities of other upstream factors such as backbone, load, asymmetry, etc. In a lab you can squeeze 20 out of HFC, but that isn't going to do us much good at the end of the line.

The constraint isn't at the user of the line. It is all the other intermediaries up to the source. Eventually when that is freed, then the limitations of HFC will become more evident at home. These considerations are not significant now. The carrier company which locally lays Pure gradually will be in the premier position. This is quite practical, but no one is interested.
