Bigfoot TS Drive a Monster Value

January 28, 1999
WINDOWS MAGAZINE via NewsEdge Corporation : The Quantum Bigfoot TS hard drive family is truly amazing. I tested the TS line's largest-capacity model, an Ultra ATA drive that stores up to 19.2GB (but formats to 18.2GB) and costs a paltry $309. That's a record-setting 1.7 cents per MB (about half the cost of typical hard drives). Though the Bigfoot's platters spin at only 4000rpm (compared to around 5400rpm for most IDE drives), it provides very respectable performance. I copied files at 0.99MB per second, compared to 1.51MBps for the rival IBM Deskstar 14GXP on our WinList.

The drive's 5.25-inch form factor means you'll have to use a standard bay, rather than a 3.5-inch hard-drive bay, but it's worth it. The Bigfoot TS's speed, capacity and value surpass the competition enough to replace the Deskstar on our WinList.

QNTM under accumulation
Rotation is frustrating, I agree. But in the case of QNTM, the consolation is that it is being accumulated under 25. The OBV set a new high today - while QNTM still below the 20 dma. But notice that support came in firmly at 23 1/8 - at the 40 dma. With this much buying pressure coming in, I expect QNTM to test its old highs at 42 on the next run.

WDC is much weaker. It pulled back to the 200 dma at 13 in a straight line. The 40 dma is at 16 1/2 today. Note that SEG held at the 20 dma at 37 1/2, and today is up 2 pts.

The weakness in WDC is alarming. The book value there is almost gone. I believe they will pull it out because of a strong consumer brand name, but it depends on how well the upcoming Secondary Offering comes off. They need the cash. I have a bit of WDC also, so I keep an eye on it. Today I wish I had gone with SEG. There was a reason why WDC was so "cheap" at 15. Now it is cheaper at 13 1/2.

QNTM will be just fine. Book value has bottomed out at $7.64. And they have $578M in cash. Maybe they will takeover WDC. WDC says they need $190M to stay in the game. I don't know if there is any logic to a merger. Just a thought.

Good luck, QNTM longs!
