It seems odd to me that QNTM wouldn't just give them the $20 million, and increase their ownership a little. Any speculation on that?

Here is a little blurb on the latest 19.2 gig BigFoot drives, from the QNTM thread, for those who don't read it. Compares favorably to the DeskStar in speed, down to 1.7 cents/mb in cost:

Stitch,

1. Quinta may porivately be researching NFR, but their stated technology is OAW (optically assisted winchester) which uses optics to help record at high densities, but is not the NFR effect.

2. When Quantum acquired the NFR technology as one of the trinkets in the acquisition of the DEC data storage business, they recognized that it would take a determined effort to get the technology ready for prime time. The strategy was to license NFR to McCoy at an outside company, have him attract the talent with start-up type options, and Qntm would keep an equity position and be the second manufacturing source for the drives.

3. Maybe Qntm is satisfied to leave their equity position as is and look for other directions to invest for their growth.

4. FYI, I remain long on Qntm. If analyst targets of $1.80 EPS going forward actually happen, I hope we see the upper $30's this year. Further diversifications beyond the HDD business are very encouraging for the longer run.
