Tom, <<OT QUESTION>>
How do you trade around a core position and not turn everything into short term gains? Last year I started trading some of the shares of my largest holding to take advantage of its volatility and then realized that, from the IRS perspective, it's first in first out. Consequently, with each trade I was working through all my shares converting them into short term holdings.

I called my on line broker and asked them if there was any way to designate shares and they said not with internet trading. They said they couldn't even distinguish between shares in a cash account and shares in a margin account.

Do you keep your core positions with a different brokerage from your trading shares?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Boa
