Intel took a gamble putting slot 1 on the desktop. It was more expensive. It was not needed for performance. But it was widely believed that the socket 7 motherboard supply would disappear as a result of this move.

It did not work out according to Intel's plans. K6's popularity rescued socket 7 and forced Intel to come up with socket 370.

The benefits of the P6 bus are limited to MP.
