Shoot, This is my impression. The cilia in our nose is there for protection. To keep critters from flying in and to stop the itty bitty critters from going any further. It doesn't attract, like a host, but gets in the way (prevents) these germs from traveling. I suppose so many cold germs collect and some make it into the blood stream and we get a cold.

The zinc, in this form, sticks to the cilia (nose hairs). They become coated with the zinc. When a cold germ looks for a place to light it cannot. OR, it is DOA when in contact with the zinc.

I have no idea if I made it any clearer for you. I am happy with this picture. ggg
