Either way, AAPL bought the time originally with some intent. So, was it this (supposedly crappy) ad, or were they planning another ad that just didn't cut the mustard?

No one has said for sure. When the original info about the spot came to light there was speculation that it would be used for a major product announcement in the spirit of the 1984 superbowl intro of the Macintosh. It is not dificult to imagine that this could have been the introduction of the P1 consumer portable. Considering that the P1 seems to be delayed it fits(although in no way proves) that the spot was originally intended for this reason.

I guess you only follow Apple

You guess wrong, again.
