Nick,

<<Any engineer types out there care to comment, clarify, or verify what Mr. Lethe is stating? >>

I am not an engineering type but have been around data storage for (too) many years in a variety of capacities. I also was an original facilitator of the SSA industry association and sat in on several of the early FC Assoc. meetings during its formative period.

I think the following link may be of help to you.

fibrechannel.com

Click on the report entitled “Fibre Channel, Storage Area Networks, and Disk Array Systems” (requires Adobe Acrobat reader)

The following is a quote from that report.

“Present day cost, performance and supply considerations motivate disk array system vendors to deliver disk array controllers that use FC to connect host computers to Ultra SCSI disks and other storage devices. These controllers combine the connectivity, data availability, and other benefits of failure tolerant disk array systems with the performance and physical configuration flexibility of FC-AL”

Be sure to read section III of the report entitled “The Changing Role of Disk Array Controllers”, especially the section about third party I/O to get some idea of the discussion and future of "pure" FC storage systems. I also recommend that you read page 6 to understand that not all implementations of FC are the same. There are multiple variations of the physical standard.

I believe Mr. Lethe has been quite accurate in his comments.

I hope this helps to clarify.

Best,
Stitch
