I will procede as you have outlined, building the 98/dos w/cd bootable first.

What bogged me down was not actually making the images of nt. That went smoothly and I have two of them now. What happened was that during the DI execution I came upon the blackened message box and the possibliity of DOS memory problems came in while trying to install MGA DOS utilities to deal with the possibility of DI video weirdities.. Then while in MS DOS I somehow lost the ability to access exit functionality. But I learned a whole lot about navigating in DOS from you while trying to explore solutions to these new found problems. There was a cascading effect of new problems developing while looking for solutions to thr previous problem.

But again, all this bad stuff has provided a forum for creating the cd bootable diskette. What will remain still unresolved, and I'm not asking for fixes right now, just documenting whats wrong with my OS config as far as I am aware currently.

1. The black box/escape key querk in DI.
2. The reason for the Out of DOS Memory message.
3. The reason for w98 looking for C:\Program during bootup when there is no C:\Program in my directory tree.

I would like to resolve these problems at some point in the near future.

I just want to make sure I have the cd driver commands right.

For config.sys

DEVICE=a:\CDs\atapi.exe /D:MSCD0001

For autoexec.bat you wrote

;rem -- /L:<driveletter> switch to assign MSCDEX drive letter
MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD0001 /V

I'm not sure what the command should be here. My cd-rom is D: under w98.

D:/MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD0001 /V ???

or

/L: D:/MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCDOOO1 /V

or

/L:A:/MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD0001 /V
