YZ: Yes...cheap labor has a huge impact. It's not just the price of imports. It's the price of the "service economy". Cheap labor is imported to silicon valley...many foreigners especially mexicans take the low-paying jobs here, like waiting tables...they tell me that money saved and sent home to mexico is enough to build mansions because the difference in cost of living is so huge. Canada also. So low labor costs in the US depends on a steady stream of new immigrants to take the low-paying jobs. Though I see for myself that the thrifty and resourceful ones seem to do better than the native-born americans.
