........And.........you can short mutual funds........no vig like SPY and MDY, but you are kind of locked in for the day. Only certain brokerage firms are set up for it.

Here (Australia) all margin lenders allow gearing/leveraging with mutual funds. In fact the margin requirements for them are often laxer than for most individual stocks. ie 30% equity required 70% loan. Of course the better fund managers here do much better than the index. First State Fund Managers got 21% in 98 on their "Imputation Fund" against 11% on the All Ordinaries Index. They weren't top of the table either (I have money in Imputation Fund).
