A year ago ATHM only had the Fremont experiment in place. We only knew what they would indirectly divulge. As you know they were secretive at best and also uncooperative. Franz can support that. Milo has re-created the ATHM network so many times that there never has been a reliable throughput value. Right now it's rickety to say the best. Some get great feeds, others get the shaft. That's the nature of something new. The worse it is in spots, the better it ends up in general. I'm glad it's the wild west in cable. Keeps the game honest and minimizes the occurrence of instant technological perfection, the promise of all those other False Dmitris.

So what do the documents define capacity to mean? You have to admit, I have a good point. It is a vague term. I'm leaning on it only because it is ambiguous and it is worthwhile to define what we mean so we know in the future for reference.

This is all that transpired:

Chirodoc had asked what were the advantages of ATHM, so Bob proffered:

1) Price ,telecos and satelites can't come close to @home

2) Bandwith @home is still in a class of it's own

3) Future applications ie. on demand movies and programing
requiring High bandwith , but yeilding billions of dollars in
advertising revenues.

4) Time to market. 3-5 years to wire most of the US Closing
out much of the competition.

5) @work & telecommuting & small business customers

Bob: in your reply: 1) is true, but isn't likely to stay that way
2) is not true--we've had this discussion in many past posts,
3) is irrelevant to @home--any MSO with 2-way HFC can
provide this without @home, and planned to provide this
before @home even existed, 4)time to market? nationwide
2-way HFC opens up the market, 5)agree! This is THE
BIGGIE. All that's needed is ONE biggie.
@work,media,school (in an indirect way)and @whatever
else they come up with are the keys.

1) we'll see what alternative technologies will come up with,
but we still use the telephone even though better
technologies have been coming for 30 years. 2) is not true?
We've had this discussion before, but who believes 2) is
false? 3) is irrelevant? Can you give me an example of an
MSO that will be doing this? And over whose HFC? Ever
heard of goodwill? Also, wrt Fourth,"Mr. Hutchison said
AtHome would receive a monthly fee from Fourth for
providing Internet connections, as well as a share of
advertising revenues.'Advertising is a very small fraction at
the beginning but over time it could be a notable contributor
to revenues,' Mr. Hutchison said." 4)I think BZ is referring to
alternative delivery pipes. 5) since what ATHM is up to,
here, is completely opaque, it's hard to say anything. I wish
they'd tell us more, but maybe it's better to leak it peu a
peu.
