Short interest in Dell Computer Corp. is on the rise again, although
the stock remains behind MCI WorldCom Inc. in the race for the
dubious honor of most-shorted stock on Nasdaq.

According to just-released data from Nasdaq, there were more than 33 million short positions in Dell as of Jan. 15, an 18 percent jump over the previous month. That put Dell right behind MCI WorldCom, which saw a 1 percent decline in shorts to 35.4 million.

Shorting a stock is similar to placing a bet that the stock will decline. Only Nasdaq-traded stocks are included in this data.

Dell had been the most-shorted stock for several months until December, when short interest declined 22 percent and MCI WorldCom took over the top spot.

Among other highly-shorted industry stocks, short interest in Intel Corp. was relatively unchanged at 19.7 million, while short interest in Apple Computer Inc. declined 14 percent to 18 million, and short
interest in Cisco Systems Inc. dropped 32 percent to 17.5 million.

There was a 24 percent decline in Microsoft Corp. shorts to 14.1 million, and a 22 percent drop in Sun Microsystems Inc. shorts to 7.1 million.

Among channel companies, short interest in Tech Data Corp. soared 44 percent to 767,535. There was a 4 percent decline in MicroAge Inc. shorts to 435,721, a 36 percent decline in CompuCom Systems Inc. shorts to 30,531 and a 2 percent decline in Merisel Inc. shorts to 62,444.

Short interest in En Pointe Technologies Inc. soared 79 percent to
26,953, while short interest in Pomeroy Computer Resources rose
15 percent to 112,149.

Ingram Micro Inc., Inacom Corp. and Vanstar Corp. all trade on the
New York Stock Exchange and were not included in the
just-released Nasdaq data.
