HP Lowers Cost of Repairing GSM Mobile Phones
BUSINESS WIRE

GENEVA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 28,
1999--

Economical GSM Mobile-station Test Set
Allows Service Technicians

to do Module-level Repair at Local Mobile-phone Repair Shops

To help service technicians cope with the growing number of mobile phones
coming into repair shops, [ Hewlett-Packard Company ] today announces a
GSM mobile-station test set that provides module-level repair capability for
the price of an entry-level, "go/no-go" tester. The announcement was made
here at a press conference.

The HP E6392A GSM mobile-station test set is expected to make service
providers and mobile-phone-repair organizations more efficient by allowing
them to delegate more repair tasks to local service centers. HP says that
service technicians can learn how to use the GSM test set in about 30
minutes.

Until now, these service organizations had to rely on the limited capability of
low-end go/no-go testers or turn to expensive, high- performance
instruments. The HP GSM test set offers a combination of just enough
functionality, good performance and low price, making it possible to equip
service technicians at the local level to diagnose and repair module-level
faults.

"By extending trouble-shooting and repair coverage to local shops, GSM
mobile-phone providers can increase the repair capability and effectiveness
of their entire service networks while keeping equipment costs in line," said
Jim Rundle, general manager for HP's Spokane (Wash.) Division.

The HP E6392A GSM mobile-station test set complements the high-end
HP 8922 series test set, which can be used at service-center hubs for
component-level testing and analysis. Together these instruments form the
basis of a complete and cost-effective GSM mobile test strategy.

A Versatile Set of Measurement Tools

To help GSM mobile-phone service centers keep pace with the rapidly
growing mobile-phone market, the HP test set provides comprehensive,
automatic GSM measurements that speed incoming inspection. With full
GSM test capabilities for GSM900, E-GSM and DCS1800, technicians
can check most mobile phones with this single instrument. Technicians can
trouble-shoot a problem to the mechanical or module level, make necessary
module replacements and make adjustments after repairs.

Measurement tools include a direct current (dc) power-consumption check,
and various transmitter and receiver measurements. To further enhance the
test set's trouble-shooting capability, asynchronous- test-mode,
spectrum-monitor and signal-generator options are available.

Measurement results are accurate and repeatable. For example, because the
GSM test set provides a peak power measurement accuracy of +/-0.6dB,
service technicians can accurately measure the power level of mobile-phone
transmitters.

Easy to Use and Maintain

An intuitive user interface and a PC-memory-card reader help make the test
set easy to set up and operate. Technicians can store different test
conditions on PC cards for easy uploading to the instrument. HP also will
supply firmware upgrades for the GSM test set on PC cards.

Optional accessories for the GSM test set include RF cables; RF and dc
power adapters, couplers, test fixtures; GSM test SIMs; and a shielded box
for testing in open, spectrally noisy environments.

U.S. Pricing and Availability

The HP E6392A GSM mobile-station test set is expected to be available in
March for $10,200.
