Nokia down, off lows after Q4 report
HELSINKI, Jan 29 (Reuters) - Shares in Finnish telecom equipment maker Nokia fell from record highs on Friday after the company reported in-line fourth quarter 1998 earnings.

At 1055 GMT, 40 minutes after the earnings release, Nokia traded at 125.50 euros down 1.6 percent on Thursday's close and over six percent off its record high 133.90 ahead of the report, but off a session low of 120.00.

Nokia reported fourth quarter pretax profit at 4.97 billion markka, compared with an average forecast of 4.78 billion and a median of 4.71 billion (range 3.90 bln-5.55 bln).

Analysts cheered the result but said expectations had risen to unrealistic levels after rival Ericsson's 1998 earnings report on Thursday.

''After Ericsson's result people thought the whole sector was going very well and so the one company that is benefiting the most (Nokia) is likely to be the real winner,'' analyst Susan Anthony at Credit Lyonnais in London told Reuters.

''I think it is, certainly in the short-term, but there comes a point when people's expectations rise above reality and that has happened here.''
