Robust U.S. economy remains nearly inflation-free
By Chris Stetkiewicz

NEW YORK, Jan 29 (Reuters) - The U.S. economy continued to surge at the end of 1998 even as inflation for the full year fell to its lowest point since the Eisenhower Administration.

Gross domestic product rose a whopping 5.6 percent in the fourth-quarter, topping expectations and pointing to strong growth at the beginning of 1999.

''This report shows the economy is firing on all cylinders. The major message is that with current financial conditions looking very favorable, any dramatic slowdown is unlikely,'' said Richard Berner, chief economist at Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh.
