Tomato, take a look at Brown. I have to admit that I have had problems with them in the passed but for the most part they are reliable. Yes, if there system goes down you will not be able to get them on the phone. When the market is busy at the opening they can be slow but one thing I have noticed is that when I make a trade, even though there system is slow the trade goes through right away but you have to wait for the rest of the data to be transmitted. All for $5.00 per trade. Hope that made sense, if not then PM me.

Tomato:
1. You're a fruit. (I hope that doesn't require further clarification)
2. As much as I hate paying a little more, ETrade is USUALLY pretty decent and now has a fairly new site with Real-Time quotes. Also offers specials for frequent buyers. If you haven't already tossed them off your search list, you could probably get a good look around. Their charges are higher, but one or two missed buys or sells from the deeper discount guy could easily wipe out the advantage.

If you have a large enough account, Schwab is affordable unless you're buying very small lots ($29.95 per web trade) and they have EXCELLENT free research capabilities for their higher bracket investors. I've never had a problem getting trades through on the web site, but there are also phone brokers if the system were to go down or slow down. I'm willing to pay the extra few bucks for the service and research.

Try DLJ Direct, I use it. The only problem is $20 for 1,000 shares but check out the latest charges. They're reliable but that's about all.

The problem i have had with Ameritrade is they don't trade most BB's on the Web - you have to call them. Not all, but Most. Funny, i have been able to SELL some BB's sometimes from their Website, but not all, and not all the time.......One day i could sell some of my IRSN, and 2 weeks later i couldn't, but a month later i could, etc. FWIW.
aside from that they are fine.....
