Compaq's Worldwide PC Leadership Position Reaches All-Time High During 4Q 1998

U.S. Market Share Shows Strong Gains As Compaq Widens The Gap With Its Competition

HOUSTON, January 29, 1999 — Compaq Computer Corporation achieved an all-time record in its worldwide market share leadership position during the 1998 fourth quarter, according to estimates released by International Data Corporation (IDC) today. Compaq's worldwide market share grew to 15.4 percent, up from the previous quarter's industry-leading 14.4 percent. In addition, the company extended its lead over its nearest competitor to 5.7 points of share. Compaq shipped over 4.2 million PCs during the quarter, surpassing all other vendors by more than 1.5 million units. IDC said that Compaq outperformed all competitors with worldwide quarter-to-quarter unit growth of more than 30 percent.
In the U.S., Compaq's fourth quarter PC market share jumped more than two points to 18.1 percent, from its leading 15.8 percent share the previous quarter. Compaq widened its market share lead to more than 5 points of share versus the nearest U.S. competitor, which continues to see erosion in its market share.
“This strong performance continues to prove that Compaq is the world's PC brand of choice,” said Enrico Pesatori, Senior Vice President, Corporate Marketing. “We saw strong demand in the corporate and small business sectors, had a great Christmas season, and we fully leveraged the demand for Internet-ready PCs.”

Pesatori noted that Compaq maintained its goal of less than four weeks of inventory in the channel. Sales out of the distribution channel grew 43 percent compared to the fourth quarter in 1997, a growth rate estimated at more than three times the market.

Cute, some guy on CNBC says if you want to add to CPQ holdings, do it in the low 40's. In his dreams!

Stuart.

CPQ bumbled the AV announcement. No details. Keeping the mechanics of it in the dark. Creating doubt about shareholders getting stock. Creating the appearance that Compaq isn't concerned about increasing shareholder value.
It's no wonder the stock is languishing. A spin-off to shareholder announcement would have the stock at 60+ already, heading for 70.
So know the big money heads back to Dell.

Compaq is starting to remind me of cutting their nose off despite their face..
