Review of 1998 at Nokia Web Site:

From CBS Marketwatch:
"Analysts had been hoping Nokia, which beat general expectations for $614 million net profit, would surpass this by a greater margin -- a habit it's had in the past. The company's shares have gained some 19 percent so far this year -- and trebled in value last year."

In my opinion, the selloff today may also be attributed to profit taking by traders that, given Ollila'a cautionary statements regarding the outlook, wish to lock in recent gains.

Ollila:
"A number of general economic factors reflected in recent currency movements make forecasting difficult. At the same time, strong growth is expected to continue in those telecommunications segments in which we have chosen to operate. Having said this, we reiterate our previously stated targets of 25-35% net sales growth and good profitability for 1999."

IMO, with the long term outlook still very positive and an upcoming stock split, those selling may soon regret it. The opportunity to get back in may be short lived.
