Well, maybe so. I think such documented accusations of child abuse ought to be investigated. If I had my way I'd have the accused take several polygraph tests, hooked up to their PC's if possible. I don't think in an organized, civilized society, where each person's rights as an accused are well protected -- with rights to an attorney, not to speak, and not be tortured, that any one should have to right to refuse to be questioned. For most crimes, where some person is not at risk, I favor heavy fines (in proportion to the accused's wealth) without trial, with the right of the accused to be tried if he wishes.
So Gates could pay a couple bil and walk off unhampered in his actions. But when a child may be raped, I'd break right in and worry about the legal consequences later -- even though I hope that children will be trained to believe as I do that nothing outside of me can do evil to me.
