"As a longtime partner and provider of computer systems for the US Navy Fleet, we're very proud to be helping the USS Missouri Memorial Association succeed with its efforts to preserve the historic Mighty Mo for the world to enjoy," said Ro Parra, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Dell's Public Americas and International Group in Austin, Texas. The memorial's "launching" comes on the 55th anniversary of the USS Missouri's launching at the New York Navy Yard on January 29, 1944. The Mighty Mo backed American forces in three wars over a half-century, but is best known for being the site where General Douglas MacArthur and the Allied Forces accepted Japan's unconditional surrender on September 2, 1945, ending World War II. Dell will help the Association continue telling the Missouri's story, both by making its business operations more efficient and enhancing the shipboard visitor experience. It is this combined impact of service and technology that delights Association officials most with the donation. "Dell has been wonderful to work with and a super partner in providing us with critical equipment for the Memorial," said Don Hess, the Association's Vice President of Operations. "When they became aware of our need, they responded immediately and generously." Dell donated 30 OptiPlex(R) GX1 desktops, which are supported by two PowerEdge(R) workgroup servers. All come with 15-inch color (13.8" VIS) monitors. The built-to-order OptiPlex systems are Dell's newest model and one of the most powerful desktop business computers, equipped with Intel(R) Pentium(R) II 400 MHz processors. The workgroup servers supplied by Dell include the PowerEdge 2200 and its most advanced workgroup server, the PowerEdge 2300. Hess says Dell's computers will be used by the entire staff and will allow the Association to build a network linking together the main office located shoreside at Pearl Harbor with the Missouri at its berthing on Ford Island. Two Dell computers will also be installed on the ship's Flag Bridge allowing guests to see a list of the Memorial's donors. By the end of this year the Association expects to install Dell computers in multi-media kiosks in key locations on the ship. Visitors will be able to access information and watch full-motion video. The kiosks will also give wheelchair bound and disabled guests an alternative experience to physically touring hard-to-reach places like the ship's interior and the flying bridge. Ranked No. 125 among the Fortune 500 companies and No. 363 in the Fortune Global 500, Dell Computer Corporation is the world's leading direct computer systems company, based on the revenues of $16.8 billion for the part four quarters. Dell designs, manufactures and customizes products and services to customer requirements and offers an extensive selection of software and peripherals.
