Moderate Republicans like Campbell should realize that they are elected by moderate voters. By capitulating to the far right, they are only ensuring that the species called "moderate Republican" will become totally extinct in the coming elections. The party would have come completely under the thumb of the RR by then...

Which is not a totally unfamiliar scenario. The Democratic party came under the thumb of the far left during the 70's and the 80's, and it took many years before the party was forced to adopt a more reasonable middle-of-the-road stance, which happened in the 90's.

But it required a series of defeats before the party could shake the far left off. And that is exactly what is going to happen to the Republican Party over the course of the next decade or so.
