From Newmont Letter to Shareholders Page
Because of our low cost status, Newmont has done little hedging in the past. Admittedly, some of our profitability in 1997 was attributable to the hedge position we acquired with Santa Fe. About 30 percent of our production was hedged in 1997 at above market prices and 20 percent will be in 1998. While we believe that gold prices will recover and want to reserve that potential for the benefit of our shareholders, we will continue to review our hedging position on a project-by-project basis.

Placer Dome Hedging News

This is not to say all companies hedge. A number don't (and probably wish they had). The Franco/Euro Nevada comapnies said they don't hedge. Newmont sounds like it doen't like to hedge (hedge was from Sanata Fe takeover). I just scaned through some of the companies. My $ 400 quote came from Barrick. This appears to be the high side.
