Good point. In fact, Bush was criticized by Clinton in the 1992 primaries for "appeasing tyrants all over the world, from Baghdad to Beijing", as he put it. And yet, when Clinton came to power, reality seemed to set in.

If a Republican like McCain or GW Bush becomes the President, they too will have to "work with" China. There is no escaping that. The reality is, to paraphrase what the British Prime Minister says about the Russians in that BBC TV comedy "Yes, Prime Minister" -- "the Chinese are too strong".
