The Cold War on Cancer

In 1992, Frank McCormick, an
internationally recognized scientist, was
flying from a scientific conference on Cape
Cod to his home in San Francisco. At
35,000 feet, in a flash of insight, he had an
idea for a new way to treat cancer. He
figured out a way to genetically engineer a
virus that causes the common cold so it will
attack cancer cells - and only cancer cells.
If successful, he would turn one of the most
benign illnesses against one of the most
deadly. So far experiments in the lab, in
mice, and in humans are showing great
promise. Correspondent Garrick Utley looks
at the potential for a medical breakthrough
and the story behind the science.
