Oracle's "raw iron" initiative seems to be in the great tradition of network computing and Larry's other ideas to subvert the dominant paradigm.

This idea of bundling the hardware and software (with no visible Operating System) seems in many ways to be a throwback to IBM-style closed systems. Of course, since many companies are committed to Oracle, they will buy this stuff.

I don't think it's strongly positive or negative for ODIS. It's an extension of Oracle's existing alliances. In this day and age, HP would also form a simultaneous alliance with ODIS if it suited them.

This Oracle8i/HP bundle doesn't seem to be much of a negative to ODIS... Just an $8B company partnering with a $47B company! There isn't a single mention of "e-commerce" in the PR so this whole Oracle8i thing appears to me as a way for mainstream corporations to tie up their shop to an intranet or, at best, to "web-enable" their outfit...
