( BW)(CA-SOFTCOM-MICROSYSTEMS) Softcom Microsystems' GigaBlade

ComNet DC 99

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 29, 1999--Softcom Microsystems, Inc. was
awarded the New Product Achievement Award for its GigaBlade(TM) Internet Accelerator subsystem
this week in the category of LAN and Internetworking at the COMNET 99 carrier and wide area
networking tradeshow in Washington, DC.
The New Product Achievement Awards are a three step process where vendors respond to a
product questionnaire which is voted on by a broad panel of industry experts. The panel selects finalists
in each category based on benefits such as return on investment, product lifecycles, interoperability, and
innovative value to the industry.
After being voted a finalist, each vendors' product had to receive a majority vote from the
COMNET 99 tradeshow during the first two days of the show. Softcom received the LAN and
Internetworking award out of 330 exhibiting and 110 possible Finalists.
"This was the first time that a semiconductor and subsystem company has won a New Product
Achievement Award in its nine year history," said Tony Stelliga, CEO of Softcom Microsystems, Inc.
"We have all worked very hard at Softcom to demonstrate the benefits of our GigaBlade(TM) Internet
accelerator subsystem," stated Stelliga, "we were rewarded by not only a panel of experts, but by end
users and service providers from the data and telecommunications worlds. The whole company shares
in this success."

About Softcom

Founded in 1996, Softcom Microsystems develops products that unlock the untapped potential of
the Internet. Softcom believes the underlying infrastructure of public networks must exceed the
performance needs of high bandwidth systems and be able to provision services that will drive
technology-enabled business practices. This fundamental shift can only happen if the components within
the infrastructure evolve far beyond present implementations.
To this end, Softcom produces smart silicon and acceleration subsystems that are a revolutionary
fusion of switching, routing, and silicon. The Softcom GigaBlade(TM) Internet Accelerator subsystem
was a finalist and runner up for the Best of Show at Networld + Interop, as well as winner the
Investors Choice Award from Technologic Partners' Technology Outlook Conference.
Softcom is privately held and venture backed by Sequoia Capital, Sevin Rosen Funds, US Trust
Company of New York, Orion Capital and StarVentures. For more information on Softcom, call
